Tree Removal Info

Austin Tree Experts provides tree removal services for residential and commercial properties throughout the Austin area. Removal is sometimes necessary to mitigate hazards, reduce competition within stands of trees, or accommodate development.

We manage 100% of permitting for removals within Austin and other local jurisdictions requiring permits. Stump removal services are offered separately.

Tree Removal Pricing

Price for tree removal services are based on many factors. Size of the tree is the obvious main factor. The extent of landscaping adjacent to the tree will influence our time on the job. Tree location matters significantly — backyard trees require more labor for debris hauling. Equipment access also affects pricing.

Stump Removal

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding involves a special piece of equipment that physically grinds the stump and any large surface roots into sawdust to a depth of approximately 4″. After grinding, sawdust fills the resulting hole, which can be replaced with soil for replanting grass or plants. New trees require planting several feet away from the original spot. This is the recommended stump removal method.

Stump Excavation

Excavation removes the entire stump and root plate using backhoe equipment for large stumps, likely causing landscape or utility damage. Cost for this service is cumulative of backhoe service, hauling away the stump, fill soil and repairs to the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Removal

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Austin?

In many cases, yes. The City of Austin requires a permit to remove any tree 19 inches or larger in diameter on private property within city limits. Heritage trees (24 inches and above for most species) have additional protections and may require mitigation such as replanting or payment into the city’s tree fund. Austin Tree Experts manages 100 percent of the permitting process for our clients — we handle the application, documentation, and any required mitigation so you do not have to navigate the ordinance on your own.

How much does tree removal cost?

Tree removal pricing varies based on several factors: the tree’s size and species, its location on your property, proximity to structures or utilities, and equipment access. A small tree in an open front yard costs considerably less than a large oak in a fenced backyard requiring crane work. We provide free on-site estimates where an arborist evaluates the full scope of the job and provides a firm quote. Call (512) 996-9100 to schedule an estimate.

Is stump grinding included with tree removal?

Stump grinding is quoted separately from tree removal. Many clients choose to have both done at the same time for convenience. Because we own our own stump grinding equipment, we can often grind the stump the same day or within a day of the removal — no waiting for a subcontractor. Visit our stump grinding page for more information on the process.

Can a tree be saved instead of removed?

Sometimes, yes. Our arborists always evaluate whether a tree can be preserved through pruning, cabling, bracing, or health treatments before recommending removal. If the tree poses an imminent hazard, is structurally compromised beyond repair, or is dead or dying, removal becomes the responsible option. We will give you an honest assessment and discuss alternatives when they exist.

What happens to the wood after removal?

All brush and limbs are chipped on site and recycled into mulch through our composting program. Trunk wood is hauled to our yard for processing. We recycle 100 percent of the material from every removal — nothing goes to a landfill. If you would like to keep firewood-length sections of the trunk, let us know during the estimate and we will set them aside for you.
